Yacht & Sailing Clubs
Yacht clubs began proliferating in the late eighteenth
century. Traditionally, they were all-male, ethnically homogeneous
bastions of old money. Indeed, even well into the second
half of the twentieth century, the membership of the most
prestigious old-line clubs was restricted to men. Today,
most yacht clubs remain elite organizations, but they do
not exclude anyone on the basis of race, gender, or creed,
and they welcome young people who share a passion for the
sport, offering them discounted initiation fees and dues.
