A shallow-draft monohull Voyageur - original design wby Rick Etsell of Pacific Motor Boat Design The Voyageur is a shallow-draft, 49-passenger, aluminum monohull owned and operated by the National Park Service. The 58'x 15'9" tour boat is homeported in International Falls, Minn., a small town on Rainy Lake near the western end of Voyageurs National Park, a 218,000-acre park that encompasses the southern portion of Rainy Lake as well as three other large lakes and about 30 smaller ones. Unlike the voyageurs of the 1600s who paddled these lakes in birch-bark canoes, today's travelers on the Voyageur will not forsake the modern comforts of screened windows, hot running water, electric heat, a microwave-and-refrigerator-equipped galley, a flush toilet and the choice of inside or outside seating. They will also be able to view the passing scenery while cruising along comfortably at 20 knots, thanks to a pair of 610-hp Cummins QSM11 diesel engines, which are set up to run on B-20 biodiesel. The engines turn Twin Disc MG-5082A gears and 30"x34" wheels. Oak Hill Marine Design. Southwest Harbor, Maine, did the original design work on the Voyageur, and Rick Etsell of Pacific Motor Boat Design, Anacortes, Wash, adjusted the design to get the required 24-knot top speed by adding eight feet to the hull, redesigning the vessel's prop tunnels, and upgrading the propulsion system. The boat was delivered in August, well in advance of the official project deadline of June 2010.
