Take on summer or cruise in stylish Hats

photos:Spring/Summer 2013

Susan Morehead, who creates chic chapeaux in her Atlanta studio, using the traditional technique of custom wooden blocks to shape the one of a kind offerings. With a nostalgic nod to the past (as a child growing up in Maryland, Susan recalls never leaving the house on Sunday without a hat and matching gloves for church), her timeless designs are trimmed with antique buttons, grosgrain and embroidered ribbons and lovely laces. The breezy summer collection, made from twisted seagrass and hand woven straw, features a variety of styles, including (above) Baku Cone, a cone crowned hat with large brim; Copper Bonnet, a petticoat straw cloche with a cut-out back and curved brim; and Black Line, a lined sisal hat with a round crown and small fiat brim.

There are infinite styles of hats, and a variety of materials and the symbiotic relationship to the wearer is an intriguing and often complicated interaction.
