Advanced River Kayak Techniques

You'll need often practice ,edge, recover and snap until it starts on both sides to feel reflexive.

If you want to get better comfortable using the back of your blade in a low-brace position aswell. You can practice to improve your bracing in rougher water if you are more professional river paddler. Paddling, advanced classes, is on the back kayak-deck paddling.

In the river shallows waters, straddle your back deck and sit right-behind your kayak seat and lift feet off the bottom but in the water, use for better balance and try paddling around as necessary low braces and high slapping.Simply put your feet down off the bottom, if you start to fall in. For most kayaker at first is quite awkward, for more challenge can you lift feet out, also the next job is to practice paddling backwards and spin turns to get comfortable quickly.

Other ways and techniques you most need to know are to practice reflexive-bracing. Again in the shallows-river-waters but you must have a kayak partner to sit on your back deck, while you in normal position in the cockpit paddle around or other ways to grab your bow and try to tip you over while you brace to upright remain. - to learn reflexive bracing is probably important, you should spend some time on small whitewater river and playing surf or in water.

Deep bracing is Another advanced kayaking skill,. where you tip so-far that your body hits the water actually. At first step is to let your body hit the water before you engage paddle and blade briefly stalling the capsize motion, you can't with your blade hit the water too soon, blade will be too deep on the water to do you any good. Also that are useful skills practicing the basic brace and can help you be comfortable and more safer on the water.

Under water, released spray skirt and somersaulted out. Get a knee up - Inside the boat, your bent knees point outward and touch the kayak interior wall of the kayak. This helps you better balance the boat. Push with your knees to help direct your kayak into transmit power to your stroke. Most kayak schools provide the kayak, spray skirt, puddle, life jacket, helmet and wetsuit you II need. You need to be prepared to get wet.

(Whitewater-kayak)River Gear, Wear

and clothing

The first protection layer between white river environment and you is your personal gear: lifejacket or pFDs, helmet, and clothing- Wetsuits, drysuits. Carefully select the best quality, this gear it makes kayaking safer and protect you from the water temperature, rock-strewn rivers and rchannels.

News - Dagger Kayaks 2013

by Mark Snowy Robertson - Product Developer

Interview With Mark published in OutdoorUSA

What's new for Dagger in 2013?

For the Dagger brand we are offering a new boat, the new Jitsu. This is our freestyle boat, and it will be available in three different sizes, the mid size being 5' 9". The boat is a small poppy, dynamic wave boat. We've done a lot of product testing with our team Dagger athletes and other paddlers throughout the world. It performs well in surf, holding through aerial tricks, but at the same time has all the volume packed into it for competitive freestyle in whitewater as well. It will retail at $1099.

Anything else new with the Dagger boats?

Yes, one of the other initiatives again with Dagger is we've done a whole new outfitting in the boats. The look is new with a topographic map visual on the seat pads. There's been a lot of innovation with our new leg-lifter, which is a first in the industry for production in white- water. This allows for more support on the underside of your legs and more control and comfort while paddling.

How does the new outfitting affect the seat?

Well, we have a single point tool seat adjustment which we build off a welded in-hull beam, and I believe Dagger was the first to do this in the industry. This allows you to get 4 to 4.5 inches of adjustment so you can trim the kayak out for comfort and fit. Also the outfitting is on a ratcheting mechanism with a quick release for safety.

What about Wilderness Systems, anything new there?

Most notably, we have the Wilderness Systems Aspire available in two sizes, the Aspire 100 and 105—different vol- ume variations with similar length. This gives us a sort of his or her's paddling style. The boat is designed to be a slightly transitional boat, very good in slow moving conditions and could even be used into a slight

amount of whitewater.

What are the technical features for the Aspire?

A There is a dry seal storage hatch on the back and also a whole new outfitting system, the Air Pro system. It has a vintage foam and a mesh fabric for increased ventilation. We focused on the adjustment points being moved up front for easier access. Essentially everything is designed to be intuitive with the idea of being adjusted from the front. There is also a leg lifter for added comfort with a quick release safety system.

With Wavesport, it looks like you have two new boats.

Yes, one of them is the Ethos available in a 9 foot and a 10 foot version. This is designed as a hybrid whitewater crossover boat. Wave Sport's montra is "whitewater period" so there is definitely a whitewater emphasis, but at 9 and 10 feet with a drop down skeg, it could certainly be used in calmer water. Also for Wave Sport we have new creek boats.

Tell us about the new creek boats?

Yes, the new boat is going to be called the Recon, and it's going to be Wave Sport's new flagship creek boat. We have three new sizes: 73,83, and 93, which relates to the overall volume of the boat. Just like the other models we discussed the outfitting and adjustment features are updated similarly.

Three body positions

More about body positions. There are three body positions that will be referred below: a neutral position, an aggressive position, and a defensive position. I'll be referring to the different backward and forward leans that you'll use.

For any other body position the only thing that is important is that your head and weight stay over the kayak. If your weight falls off to the side, you're going to flip. The position that you'll use is dependent on your situation, but in general, the ideal paddling position is sitting up straight, with a slight lean forward

A defensive position means, the upper body leaning back, as it is the natural reaction when we find ourselves in an uncomfortable situation. In this body position, we find ourselves reacting to the things that happen rather than taking charge. An aggressive position refers to leaning forward(as it usually indicates that the paddler is taking control of the situation) and the neutral position means sitting up straight.

This tends to be the best paddling position, it will also provide you with the most control over your boat edging and will let you take the most powerful strokes. This position helps to keep the stern edges out of the water. There is no doubt that good paddling technique is crucial for any paddler to develop, but when it comes to Extreme racing, technique alone won't do the trick.

Whitewater SIGNALS

American Whitewater lists a number of visual signals paddlers can use to communicate while on the water by displaying the paddle in varying positions.

The signals include paddle positions for Slop, All Cleat; Help/Emergency, and I'm fine.

Stop signal -Hold the paddle with both and hands and parallel with the water.

Help/Emergency - Hold the paddle in All Clear position and slowly wave the paddle left to right. If possible, use this signal in conjunction with a whistle.

fill Clear - Hold the paddle vertically overhead, blade up. with broad portion of blade facing the people you are signaling.

The distress signal using a whistle is three long blasts. Whistles should be attached to the PFD with a lanyard at all times.
